The St. John’s Regional Fire Department has responded to several illegal fires within the twin cities early this morning.
The provincial government increased the fines for starting a fire during the provincial fire ban between $50,000 to $150,000 and violators can also face six months to one year in prison.
Premier John Hogan has weighed in stating the importance of obeying the rules or violators can also pay the additional cost for firefighters dispatching to douse the flames.
The Premier also stated that he is very frustrated with those who are not being obedient to the no fire ban.
Hogan continued to say that he is very pleased with the response time firefighters have been arriving to areas to extinguish such fires set by those who feel that the rules don’t apply to them.
Hogan went on stating that he is pleased with the obedient citizens who have reported set fires and is pleased with volunteers who have been working around the clock keeping the province safe and also with the residents who continue to adhere to the ban.
Other Atlantic Provinces like Nova Scotia have implemented temporary prohibition from entering forest areas and this could be a provision implemented here in Newfoundland if people continue to be disobedient to the rules.
