A severe thunderstorm with lightning rippled through the Twin Cities just after midnight, causing power disruptions and small fires.
Both the RNC and the St. John’s Regional Fire Department were called upon, primarily due to false alarms tripping during the storm.
Newfoundland Power is also busy due to the severe lightning striking substations and power lines in the metro region.
A video recorded by Twin Cities News on Blackmarsh Road captures lightning striking a nearby pole on Blackmarsh Road next to the City of St. John’s depot station.

The RNC included 39 Salter Place in its homicide investigation as they are seeking a firearm that may match the bullet tracing fired on the morning of the murder of Terry Griffin.

At approximately 10:30 p.m., the RNC issued a search and seizure warrant for the tenant’s home. Police ordered the tenant and her children to vacate, causing additional stress on the woman, in which she was transported to hospital via ambulance, according to the woman’s 18-year-old son, who was standing on the sidewalk with his siblings, the youngest being 17 years old, and their family pets.

The teens have been situated with family friends away from the Salter Place neighbourhood until the police complete their investigation.

Residents on Salter Place were startled by a loud gunshot that echoed throughout the small cul-de-sac neighbourhood at about 9:30 a.m.
According to Salter Place resident no.1, who knows the victim, was caught up in a love triangle, which is most likely the reason for the shooting.
30-year-old Terry John Griffin, of 37 Salter Place in St. John’s, was murdered earlier this morning due to an altercation involving another male who is unidentified at this time, as the RNC are still investigating.
According to Salter Place resident no.2, Griffin was seeing a woman who was romantically involved with another man.
The incident resulted in a shelter-in-place advisory for Salter Place and surrounding streets, which was eventually expanded to Gros Morne Place as the investigation continues into the nighttime hours.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary has obtained video footage from a nearby home that led them to the conclusion to expand the shelter-in-place order.

Dana Metcalfe live Facebook feed on July 23, 2025.

Holy Trinity High School Principal Trevor Taylor is suing local advocate Dana Metcalfe for allegedly conveying defamatory comments made about him on social media.

Taylor claims Metcalfe began an online attack campaign against him in which Metcalfe had her followers attack, harass and defame him.

Metcalfe claims during her live broadcast earlier this evening that the allegations made against her are untrue and alleged that Taylor is actually defaming her.

Metcalfe began her live feed with the notion that she is not suicidal and if anything were to happen to her, her fanbase would know who would be responsible.

Metcalfe claimed that someone from the NLTA (Newfoundland & Labrador Teacher Association) called for her death.

Metcalfe also claimed that her child has also encountered bullying.

Metcalfe claims there is corruption within the province, from the Government – its ties to the NLTA, and the 2SLGBTQUIA, in which all have made false claims against her.

Lawyer Kyle Reese contacted VOCM NEWS earlier today in which VOCM released an article about the civil suit against Metcalfe on the behalf of Trevor Taylor.

Metcalfe continued to say that her business has taken a toll, and TD Canada Trust Bank placed a lien on her house.

Metcalfe intends to countersue Kyle Reese, Odea & Earle and Trevor Taylor for 150-thousand dollars.

SpiceX has been robbed yet again, this time around, by two individuals who entered the store shortly before 8:30pm on Sunday night.

The staff posted on the store’s Facebook Page, stating that the suspects are clearly identifiable and are asking them to come forward; if not, the store’s security video footage will be released to the public.

SpiceX’s Facebook page notification post about the most recent robbery.

On June 23, a thief walked into the store holding a gasoline can in his hand and, using a knife, held up the store, taking over $200.00 in cash. (Click the link to watch the video of that robbery.)

The suspect then fled on foot to a nearby apartment complex on Blackmarsh Road, where tenants saw him stripping off layers of clothing, including his footwear, pouring the contents of the gasoline can over his clothing, setting the clothing on fire and fleeing the area wearing a black T-shirt, dark blue jeans and on barefoot.

The fire was extinguished in less than a minute by the son of one of the tenants after being set by the suspect in that robbery, according to the tenant who witnessed the bizarre incident through her back window.

One of the groups newest member for 2 years is 83 year-old, Garry Smith, who is a known artist from Ontario.

Smith said he became interested in art at the age of four, when his father had purchased an old house that had white wallpaper, armed with a crayon, the 4-year-old Smith drew people like figures on the wall and when he started kindergarten he drew pictures on the hallway walls.

He attended Expo ’67 and ’68 where he said he honed the ability to capture the experience a one-of-a-kind likeness in the timespan of 5 to 15 minutes during 10 hours a day seven days a week and that was very transformative from what he said was normally use to which was time-taking.

Smiths’ drawings have been exhibited across Canada, down south in New York City, across the ocean in countries such as France (Paris) and China.

Smith said he relocated to St. John’s during the Covid pandemic to explore a new art adventure interest in Harbour Themes.

  • “Eliminating the sugar tax is good, how about cutting out the tobacco tax?”

    Adam Rose
    Twin Cities News

Premier Hogan’s promise to repeal the sugar tax introduced by former Premier Andrew Furey will actually be eliminated on July 1.

But what about the tobacco tax? Smokers I’ve spoken to in the Twin Cities hope the tobacco tax will one day be eliminated.

Bobbie Bennett of Mount Pearl said, “Eliminating the sugar tax is good, now how about cutting out the tobacco tax?”

Sara Loveless of St. John’s said, “I don’t understand why the government would even draw up the notion of such a tax on Pepsi drinkers, but hey, the government placed a much higher tax percentage on smokers some years ago!”

The tobacco tax has been quite controversial among smokers for several years. According to the Newfoundland & Labrador finance department, the tax percentage differs for: cigars – 125 per cent of the purchase price, loose tobacco fine cut – 56 cents per gram, and 32.5 cents per cigarette.

“32.5 cents per cigarette, sweet Christ on high, that’s 32.5 cents multiply by 20 and divide that by 100, that’s $6.50 per pack, sons of b*%#@&*” says Gordon Hollett of St. John’s, as he refers to the government. He also said, “People want their smoke just as bad as they want their bottle of Coke, root beer and Crush pineapple. I suppose next they will tax the air we breathe and the s*$* we put in the toilet, oh wait, toilet paper is taxed and food is not, but it’s coming!”
